Frequently asked questions

Good questions before you begin.

Starting therapy is a big step. Here are answers to what people most often want to know.

What happens in the first session?

The first session is about getting to know you and what brings you in. We'll talk through your history, your goals, and what you're hoping for — and begin shaping a plan together. There's nothing you need to prepare. Just come as you are.

Do you offer online therapy?

Yes. I offer secure video sessions to anyone located anywhere in California, plus in-person sessions in San Diego and La Jolla. Many clients mix both depending on their week.

Do you offer therapy in Mandarin?

Yes — I'm bilingual and offer full sessions in Mandarin Chinese (普通话) or English, whichever helps you feel most understood. Some things are simply easier to say in your first language, and that's welcome here.

How much does therapy cost, and do you take insurance?

I offer a free 15-minute consultation to start. I'm in-network with several major insurers, and I provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement. You'll find the full details on the Fees & Insurance page.

How often will we meet?

Most clients begin with weekly 50-minute sessions, which builds momentum and trust early on. As you progress, we may space sessions further apart. We'll always decide the rhythm together, based on what you need.

Is what I share confidential?

Yes. Therapy is confidential and protected by law, with a few limited exceptions required for safety (such as risk of serious harm to yourself or others). I'll walk through exactly what that means at your first session.

What if I've never been to therapy before?

That's completely okay — many of my clients are new to it. There's no "right way" to do therapy. I'll guide the process, explain what we're doing and why, and move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

How do I get started?

The easiest way is to book a free 15-minute consultation or call (619) 268-8227. It's a relaxed conversation to see whether working together feels right — no commitment needed.
